When Zoe, a brilliant young scientist who specializes in identifying extinct viruses, is offered a job at a remote research facility in Antarctica, she soon discovers her employer has unearthed a perfectly preserved Neanderthal. That is only one of the many dark secrets lurking at the facility as Zoe races against time to stop a global pandemic. In the vein of Andromeda Strain, Altered States, and Jurassic Park, Retrovirus seamlessly blends human drama, action, science fiction, and horror into a 64-page graphic novel written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray (Queen Crab, Jonah Hex, Creator-Owned Heroes) and illustrated by Norberto Fernandez (The Tattered Man).

This was an interesting take on the zombie genre, and I appreciated that. I also generally liked Zoe as a character. However, there was a lot of unnecessary sexualization of her, which bothered me a lot. I also felt like the end of the book was quite rushed, and that this maybe should've been a miniseries instead of just a one-shot.

Retrovirus eBook Jimmy Palmiotti Justin Gray Norberto Fernandez Reviews

I'm fairly unapologetically a fan of pretty much everything. I'm easily pleased and always raving excitedly about *something*. I express that to illustrate the fact that it's a severe rarity that I feel as "bleh..." about a graphic novel as I did about this one. Everything about it was forced. I loved the premise going in to it, but it felt more like a thickly delivered fanfic wet dream focused more on T&A of the main character than it did an actual plot. Don't get me wrong, I had zero problems with a bit of sex (or even a lot of it) but not without substance to back it up. I couldn't have rolled my eyes any harder at the ending if I wanted to. I only give it the second star because it DID have a cool premise and some cool art, but overall? Disappointing...
Great short story with a smart woman protagonist. Action driven bit of a fun take on the neanderthal question. Why did they die out? Are we the heirs of them? Does their DNA live on in us?
Way to short. Could have been good had the characters and action been developed instead of crammed into a few pages
This could have been worse, just not sure how. The art is pretty mediocre and the story (weaponized caveman?) reminds you of Class of Nukem High, just without the same skill and care to audience.
Version is really hard to read; Story is so stupid and small that it is not even worth a dollar. Graphics are OK.
I've read Justin Gray's work teamed with Jimmy Palmiotti before and with this graphic novel, they are at their best. The art by Norberto Fernandez is intricate and beautiful. A major pharmaceutical company called Bio-Pharm offers a brilliant young scientist named Zoe a job at their isolated laboratory in Antarctica.
As she enters she notices that the facility is well guarded by professional mercenaries. Zoe is impressed with the team she will be working with and is shocked to see the specimens when they are revealed to her. But there is a major catch. The company is working with a deadly virus being developed for war. There are many loose cannons here and I won't reveal some major tricks the company has up it's sleeve.
This is one of the best graphic novels I have read in a long time. Not for the faint of heart! I'm glad I found it on .
Predictable, overused, sci-fi story line. In the version the panels were very pixelated and difficult to read, or appreciate the artwork. Panels were cropped wrong as well, cutting off word bubbles. I was entirely frustrated with the entire experience.
This was an interesting take on the zombie genre, and I appreciated that. I also generally liked Zoe as a character. However, there was a lot of unnecessary sexualization of her, which bothered me a lot.
