What a great resource of some of the U.K.'s most interesting castles and manors!

• Knole was fascinating to read about... listen to this little description: “Knole is the largest private house in England. It is a calendar house with, allegedly, 365 rooms, 52 staircases and 7 courtyards.” (Well, I never!)

• Longleat is another intriguing manor... it opened a safari park on its grounds in 1966. (Now that's a cool-sounding place I'd like to visit!)

• Calke Abbey also has some interesting history... most of which is still here to stay: “Naturalists and compulsive collectors, the Harpur Crewe clan seems to have never thrown anything away.” (If you had a whole castle to yourself, would you fill it with everything you loved? And I mean EVERYTHING?)

If you're a writer looking for some beautiful settings to include in your book – I could definitely see how this handy guide could be very helpful in getting you acquainted with some wonderful historical (or modern) settings.

Also in every chapter, if the particular site had been used in a movie or a TV show before, the credits are given – which I found fascinating. (It might be fun to watch a film just for the purpose of seeing that amazing building used.)

Anyways, there's 25 fabulous stories included. It's a fun joyride to hop around the U.K. through the vehicle of this book and get a crash-course on these amazing locations. I'd definitely like to get volume 2 as well.

This feels more like a bathroom book than a book I'd normally want to download for my kindle. I got it when it was free.

This book looks at a lot of old manor homes in England and gives the history along with some touristy information for if you'd like to visit. So much more could have been written on each of these homes; however for what the book was trying to do (a broad overview) it was spot on.
A very interesting book about 25 different British "great houses". Fascinating read for anyone interested in history or for those who may be planning a trip to the UK. I would love to visit some of these places. It was also interesting to read about the different movies/programmes these homes have been featured in.

The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating was that there aren't very many photos in it. There are a few pictures of each property, but more would have been nice. All in all, an excellent book. 4 1/2 stars!
If you love old architecture and grand places... this is a great picture book! If I had two dimes to rub together I would hire someone to turn our grounds into some of the gardens shown in this book. There is nothing like or to compare to English gardens. Just beautiful!

If you are interested in just wandering around " Downton Abbey" you will be disappointed. If you like wandering through history... you will love it. The photography is fantastic.
If you enjoy Downtown Abbey, you will love this book. However, it's fascinating to learn about the history of each building. The fact that the author also describes tours and places you may stay in during your trip is helpful for tourists who want to do something different. The only thing I would have enjoyed is more pictures. This is a quick read that more pictures might actually bring more people to the sites. Overall a great read.
Used this on a recent trip to England. There are hundreds of Manor houses open to the public so this book is very limited but a good start. Order the Hudson book if you want a more comprehensive listing although this book has more info on the houses it does list. If look at it now as my "starter" book. It got us interested and on the way to spending two weeks trying to see every manor house we could.
The title does not indicate that the book is dealing with houses which are similar to Downton. Written in a concise, strIghtforward form it lists the old houses - manor houses, country houses and great houses which are scattered around Britain, open to the public with a small potted history of ownership, opening hours, the web site and other details which will be of interest. If you are interested in the houses of England, the walks, the fabulous scenery and nature depicted in the book, this is definitely for you. Even if you cannot travel to actually see these places, the book is a very good one for those of us who like to read and know about beautiful places.
I picked up this book free during an giveaway. Listings and descriptions of various old castles and manor houses in Great Britain, from the house where "Downton Abbey" is filmed, to fabulous Blenheim, ruined Nymans, and working Wimpole Estate.

A bit of a sales pitch, as the authors emphasize restaurants, hotels, and places available to rent for weddings and conferences, and contact information is provided for all sites. But the history is intriguing and the photos are gorgeous on my K4PC. In fact, my major criticism is that there should have been more photos. The book only covers 24 manors, with 2-3 photos per location, and could easily have included more photos. Particularly irritating is a description of an especially noteworthy place, such as "the awe-inspiring views from the Temple of Apollo" at Stourhead or "rambling alongside the Montgomery Canal" at Powis, and then not have a photo to go along with the description! This book is unquestionably gorgeous, but more photos would have made it spectacular.
